Florence is an incredibly picturesque city, and the Italian Renaissance architecture that it is known for is amazing to behold. However, you don’t just have to admire Florence and its landmarks from the ground-there are many viewpoints scattered throughout the city that allow for breathtaking views from above! If you are looking for the perfect Instagram, picnic location, or a place to take in Firenze in all its majesty, try hitting some of these great spots!
1. Piazzale Michelangelo

If you ask anyone who has spent some time in Florence where the best view is, the view from the Piazzale Michelangelo is bound to top the list. This famous piazza is well-known for the panoramic views it offers of the city, with an especially good vista of the Arno river and the bridges that connect the two sides of Florence. It’s a bit of an uphill hike, but totally worth the effort to get there! On busy evenings, you will find the steps of the piazza crowded with locals and tourists alike, hoping to catch an unforgettable sunset. In high season, arrive early, vino in hand, and prepare for an amazing sight!
2. San Miniato

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Just another set of stairs abouve the popular Piazzale Michelangelo lies San Miniato, the oldest church in Florence. Perched atop this hill, San Miniato is a great way to escape the crowds near the piazzale Michaelangelo while still enjoying a similar vantage point. Step inside the church, and enjoy the view outside-it’s a win-win.
3. The Duomo

This one in pretty much a no brainer, considering the Duomo is one of Florence’s most well-known sights, and is its #1 tourist attraction. I am happy to report that the Duomo is indeed an excellent place to see a pretty cool vista of the city. Climb the bell tower for a view that include the dome itself, or the campanile for a 360 degree view of Florence. The 15 Euro all inclusive 24 hour ticket will get you entrance to both, as well as the museum, baptistery, and the area beneath the church. 4. The Westin Excelsior

Its no secret, I love rooftop bars, and the Westin is my favorite in Florence. For 20 Euros you can enjoy a delicious aperitivo, sip a yummy cocktail, and take in the sights of Florence from above-not a bad deal if you ask me! The Westin is located along the river, and is my favorite vantage point over the Ponte Vecchio. For info on other great rooftop bars to hit in Florence
5. Fiesole

If you are willing to venture a little further, a 20 minute bus ride will take to you Fiesole, a cute town overlooking the city. I recommend making a ½ day trip of it to see the nearby archaeological site and museum, ending the evening around sunset with a dinner at La Reggia. The food is divine and the view is unparalleled, a winning combination. Learn how to spend the perfect afternoon in Fiesole here!
